SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER

The wealthy Violet Venable (Katherine Hepburn) attempts to bribe a young surgeon (Montgomery Clift) into performing a controversial procedure on a young girl (Elizabeth Taylor) in order to prevent her from “defiling” the name of her deceased son who, though she denies it, had certain “unsavory appetites”.

A gem of Classic Hollywood and coded queer cinema, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER uses the wit of its source material (Tennesee Williams) and screenplay (Gore Vidal) to touch on subjects more or less forbidden in Hollywood at the time. A melodramatic script, bombastic performances from Taylor and Hepburn (Hepburn is practically a drag queen) and shocking subject matter, this film is a true delight for fans of classic film.
